Recreation

Recreation opportunities allow people to connect with the land, and the Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society (LNTCFS) is dedicated to promoting the use and enjoyment of the Community Forest by both locals and visitors.

To support these recreational opportunities, the LNTCFS has invested in several local projects, including:

Dixon Lake Recreation Site

In 2017, the LNTCFS installed a dock at the Dixon Lake Recreation Site to enhance opportunities for freshwater fishing. Located along the southern boundary of the LNTCFS tenure, this site features an outhouse, a picnic table, and a small rock-ringed firepit.

Accessing the site is easy: from Agate Bay Road, turn left onto the Minova Forest Service Road (FSR). At approximately 11 km, turn left onto Dixon Lake Road and drive about 10 km, parking in a small pullout on the left. The LNTCFS conducts periodic site visits to ensure the area is clean, the outhouse is stocked with toilet paper, and the dock remains in good condition.

Please remember to pack out what you pack in—this helps keep the site clean for other users and protects local wildlife.

South Barriere Lake Recreation Site

In 2022, the LNTCFS signed a partnership agreement with Recreation Sites and Trails BC to take over the maintenance of the South Barriere Lake Recreation Site. Located just outside the eastern boundary of the LNTCFS tenure, this site can be accessed via South Barriere Lake FSR, approximately 11 km from the main road. This first-come, first-served site features two outhouses, two campsites – each equipped with a picnic table and a small rock-ringed firepit – and a cartop boat launch.

The South Barriere Lake site promotes opportunities for fishing, camping, paddle sports, and birdwatching. Recreation Sites and Trails BC webpage here

Please use caution while driving to this site, as active logging and hauling occur on South Lake FSR. Always give logging trucks the right-of-way.

East Lake Grind

In 2021, the LNTCFS began implementing Wildfire Risk Reduction prescriptions in parts of its tenure area along East Barriere Lake FSR. During field reconnaissance, we discovered an unregistered recreation trail and took proactive measures to protect this feature during the planned logging associated with our wildfire risk reduction block K1Z010-10. Post-logging restoration efforts included trail building and rerouting, clearing of logging slash, planting seedlings, and the installation of two viewing benches.

The trail can be accessed at three points:

Upper Access: Accessible from Lakeview Road (2.8km East Lake FSR), continue past the first junction and turn right at the second junction.

Lower Access: Accessible from Lakeview Road (2.8km East Lake FSR), stay right at the first junction.

Bottom Access: This starting point occurs on private property at Sands Resort.

Dunn Lake North Recreation Site

In 2023, the LNTCFS installed a dock at the Dunn Lake North Recreation Site to enhance opportunities for freshwater fishing. This first-come, first-served site can be accessed via Dunn Lake Road from Barriere, the Little Fort Ferry, or Clearwater. The site features an outhouse and six campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and a small rock-ringed firepit, as well as a cartop boat launch.
